Gas Leaks in Chestnut Hill’s Older Homes

Many Chestnut Hill and Mt. Airy homes are 100 years old or more. Their original black iron gas piping has had decades of settling, remodels and added appliances. Threaded joints loosen, old valves wear out, and fittings buried in walls or under floors can leak without anyone noticing.

Many of these homes have also had newer yellow CSST (corrugated stainless steel tubing) added for kitchens, dryers, fireplaces or generators. CSST must be installed and bonded correctly. We check both the old iron and the newer CSST, so the whole gas system is safe, not just the one fitting that was leaking.

Gas Leak

Signs of a Gas Leak in Your Home

1

Rotten Egg Smell

Gas utilities add a sulfur-like odor so leaks can be noticed. Take even a faint smell seriously

2

Hissing near a pipe, meter or appliance

Gas escaping under pressure can make a hissing or whistling sound.

3

Yellow or orange burner flames

A healthy gas flame is blue. Yellow flames, soot or a pilot that keeps going out need checking.

4

Dead patches in the yard

A buried gas line leaking can kill grass or plants above it.

5

Higher gas bills than usual

An unexplained jump in usage can mean gas is escaping.

6

Headaches, dizziness or nausea at home

symptoms that ease when you go outside can be a warning sign. Leave and call for help.

PGW and PECO: Getting Your Gas Turned Back On

When a leak is reported, the utility shuts off gas to the home. It won’t turn it back on until a licensed plumber has repaired the leak and the gas lines pass an air pressure test. In Chestnut Hill, Mt. Airy and the rest of Philadelphia, that utility is PGW. In Wyndmoor, Erdenheim, Flourtown, Lafayette Hill and Glenside, it’s PECO.

We repair the leak, run the pressure test with calibrated equipment, document the results and coordinate with PGW or PECO. In most cases, gas can be restored the same day repairs pass.

Our Gas Leak Repair Process

From your first call to hot water restored — here’s exactly what happens.

1

Safety check

We confirm the home is safe to enter and ventilated, and coordinate a shutoff with PGW or PECO if needed.

2

Find the leak

Electronic gas detectors, combustible gas indicators and soap testing pinpoint the leak, including inside walls and under floors.

3

Repair

We tighten or replace failed fittings, valves and pipe sections, and repair or replace CSST and appliance connectors to code.

4

Pressure test

The system is pressurized with air and monitored for any drop.

5

Restore service

We document the repair and test, then coordinate with the utility to turn your gas back on.

Chestnut Hill Gas Leak FAQs

What should I do if I smell gas in my Chestnut Hill home?
Leave without switching anything on or off and don’t use your phone inside. From a safe distance, call PGW at 215-235-1212 or 911. Don’t go back in until the utility or emergency responders say it’s safe.
PGW is responsible for the line from the street to your meter. You’re responsible for all piping from the meter into and through the house, and that repair must be done by a licensed plumber.
Yes. PGW and PECO require an air pressure test showing the lines hold pressure before they restore gas service. We perform and document it.
Not always. Many old iron lines are still sound. We test the system and replace only the sections that are leaking or unsafe.
Yes. We repair leaks and run PECO pressure tests in Wyndmoor, Erdenheim, Flourtown, Lafayette Hill and Glenside.
It depends on where the leak is and what needs replacing. A loose fitting costs far less than replacing a pipe run inside a wall. We give you an upfront price after inspection, before any work starts.
