In Bustleton’s split-levels, natural-draft water heaters in partially finished basements are prone to downdrafts — especially when a return air vent or bathroom exhaust fan creates negative pressure that pulls combustion gases back down the flue. We diagnose the actual cause — not just the symptom — so the problem stays fixed.
MY WATER HEATER IS MAKING LOUD POPPING OR RUMBLING NOISES. IS IT DANGEROUS?
Popping and rumbling sounds are typically caused by sediment buildup on the bottom of the tank. Philadelphia’s city water carries mineral content that accelerates this problem, especially in neighborhoods with older water mains like parts of Torresdale and Holmesburg. The sediment traps water beneath it, which superheats and creates steam bubbles that pop through the sediment layer. A sediment flush usually resolves the noise. If the tank floor has already warped from prolonged sediment contact, replacement may be necessary.
SHOULD I REPAIR MY GAS WATER HEATER OR REPLACE IT?
As a general rule, if your water heater is under 8 years old and the repair cost is less than half the cost of a new unit, repair makes sense. If it’s over 10 years old, has a history of repeated repairs, or shows signs of tank corrosion (rust-colored water, visible rust on the tank body), replacement is usually the better investment. CAN A GAS WATER HEATER ISSUE CAUSE PGW TO SHUT OFF MY GAS?
Yes. If PGW detects a gas leak at your water heater during a routine meter read or safety inspection, they can red-tag the appliance and shut off gas to the unit — or to the entire house if the leak is severe. We repair the issue, pressure test the gas connection, and coordinate directly with PGW to restore service the same day in most cases.
